Offbeat Visits Sleep & Eat Exhibition 2019
Team Offbeat | 22 Nov

This week, the team visited the Sleep & Eat exhibition at The Olympia, Kensington. Amongst the latest in hospitality design, we attended thought-provoking talks by some of the world’s most innovative designers.

Our highlight was a talk by Johannes Torpe. Former Chief Creative Director of Bang & Olufsen, Johannes Torpe is a self-trained interior architect, designer, graphic artist and all-round design activist. Giving an insight into his unrestrained and intuitive approach to design, the talk focused on genuine and honest design experiences during a time when retail and hospitality spaces need to be more than ‘just another store’.

United Cycling Lab & Store

An example of the future of retail is United Cycling Lab and Store, Copenhagen. More than a bike shop, the space exists as a bike shop, showroom, workshop, bike-fitting space and meeting room.

“We have designed a retail space that fosters knowledge, learning and innovation and perhaps even more important, inspires people to dream.” Johannes Torpe

The store concept is based on the contrasts of nature and science and the meeting of man and machine. This is reflected in the material palette which utilises warm oak against cold industrial concrete and steel.

Dubbed a “modern monastery for the science of cycling”, the clinical and futuristic lab is laid out in a grid formation, intended to reflect the meticulous construction process of the product. Illuminated white walls and mechanical hoists attached to the ceiling, suspend and lower bikes into the space. The overall experience is an interactive and engaging space, encouraging customers to inspect, touch and admire the bicycles.

Bang & Olufsen Nexus Store

Embodying its name, Nexus (the Latin word for ‘unity’), the store integrates architectural design, retail design and product design, all under one roof.

At the heart of the retail concept is user interaction. The customer can stream music straight from their smartphone, allowing them to engage in an experience that transcends from the music in the products to the design of the store itself.

The interior utilises juxtaposing materials such as leather, wood, concrete and brass for contrasting effect. Raw, unprocessed materials house and display products and help to accentuate the sleek and elegant aesthetic of the B&O product line.

The brass and glass exterior facade complement the lines and shapes in the surrounding environment. By night, the perforated exterior panels are illuminated by LED lights, giving the square a pulsating glow and add to the overall customer experience.

To remain competitive in the hospitality sector, we can’t reiterate enough the importance of branded experiences. Tell your story with honestly and integrity and engage with your customers at every opportunity for a truly unique experience.
