Interior Design Trends – Summer 2017
Team Offbeat | 02 Jun

A look at some of the latest design trends making an appearance this summer. From charred wood to handcrafted objects, we look at how these trends can be incorporated into your coffee shop or restaurant interior design.

Charred Wood

Move over reclaimed and antique wood, the next big design trend is charred or burnt wood. Shou Sugi Ban is an ancient Japanese technique which is popular due to its low maintenance and resistance to fire, rot and pests. The technique involves setting fire to the wood, cooling it with water and finishing with natural oil; an environmentally friendly way of preserving wood. The charred effect adds a sculptural element which emphasises the natural grain and texture of the wood and the dark colour is visually striking to create a very dramatic result. This effect would work perfectly in a rustic-style restaurant or coffee shop.

Denim Blue

Previously, blue has been perceived as cold but these new denim tones can add a relaxed yet fun ambience to any interior. With smoky blue being a prominent colour for 2017, its grey tone has a versatile and timeless quality. Blue goes with just about everything and Dulux’s colour of the year, ‘Denim Drift’, is a perfect neutral colour to embellish with different textures and materials. This popular colour is the perfect accompaniment to any coffee shop interior due to its adaptability and calming, tranquil qualities.

Handcrafted Objects

With a heightened appreciation for craftsmanship, bespoke treasures are becoming increasingly desirable for our interiors. From craft beer to furniture and clothing, we are seeing a rise in the desire to be seen as supporting local craftsmen. These creative and considered approaches can be translated into coffee shop design, not only in supporting local business but by introducing a crafted interior design, indicative of quality.
