Give a Little This Christmas!
Team Offbeat | 21 Dec

Planning a holiday closure at your retail or coffee shop this Christmas? Do you have surplus food that will otherwise go to waste? Spare a thought for those less fortunate this year and donate what you can.

Here are a few charities who are dedicated to redistributing your surplus food.

Fare Share

Fare Share believe that no good food should ever go to waste. Part of a global movement, Fare Share work to alleviate hunger by sourcing and redistributing surplus food to people who need it. Last year, 16,992 tonnes of food were delivered to 9,653 charities, including homeless hostels, children’s breakfast clubs and domestic violence refuges across the UK – that’s enough food for approximately 36.7 million meals!

City Harvest

City Harvest work with organisations to help feed the hungry as well as help the environment. Redistributing more than 30 tonnes of food per week, City Harvest collect food from restaurants, grocers and manufacturers, delivering to charities including veteran centres, homeless hostels and drug and alcohol abuse organisations. Not only helping the vulnerable, City Harvest also help to prevent food going to landfill, where it would release toxic gasses into the environment.

The Felix Project

The UK food industry generates 1.9 million tonnes of avoidable food waste each year! At the same time, 4 million children in the UK live in households that struggle to buy enough good quality, healthy food. Working with 200 charities and 200 suppliers, The Felix Project collects surplus food and redistributes it to charities, who turn it into meals for disadvantaged adults and children.

Donating your unsold food for social good this Christmas is rewarding for both you and the community. With plenty of charities to help you arrange time and cost-effective solutions for dealing with your surplus food, what’s stopping you? – ‘tis the season of goodwill after all!

Merry Christmas!
