Coffee Shop Design: What to Expect in 2017

With Pantone having released their new colour of the year ‘Greenery’ and with the recent emergence of Scandinavian trend, ‘Lagom’, we look at what to expect for coffee shop design in 2017.

Last year saw the reveal of Pantone’s 2017 colour of the year, ‘Greenery’, and the hype of lifestyle trend – ‘Hygge’ – a Danish word meaning ‘cosiness’ in English.  However, there is a new upcoming Scandinavian trend – ‘Lagom’ – translated as ‘just the right amount’ which is set to replace ‘hygge’ and is all about the concept of balance. So, how could ‘Lagom’ and ‘Greenery’ influence coffee shop design this year?

Greenery, the fresh and zesty yellow-green shade as described by Pantone, expects to build a stronger connection between people and nature. The colour evokes feelings of the great outdoors and helps to revitalise spaces and environments. Coffee shops and restaurants could act upon the strong influence of nature to include more open spaces, plant life and alternative earthy materials within their interior design to push a more health-conscious setting.

Additionally, green is a neutral colour that sits well against a multitude of other colours and therefore paves the way for endless brand design opportunities.

Out with ‘Hygge’ and in with ‘Lagom’

Whilst ‘hygge’ is seen as a momentary state of bliss, ‘lagom’ refers to a way of living with not too much or too little of something but just the right amount. The new Scandinavian trend could influence the amount and type of materials used within coffee shop design and could encourage a more limited, refined product offering. Could this hint towards more simplistic and minimal design in terms of interior and service?

Both ‘greenery’ and ‘lagom’ promote a fresh essence of life and living and we look forward to seeing how they are incorporated within hospitality design in 2017.
