Casual Dining Food Trends 2019

We take a look at some of the hottest food and beverage trends for 2019.

Fermented Food

Fermenting, pickling and brining have been used as a way to preserve food for centuries. This year it’s set to go mainstream. Think kimchee, kombucha tea, kefir, sauerkraut and pickles. It’s all down to the current health craze – consuming less processed foods, opting for foods high in probiotics to improve the immune system. Those leading the way are ‘Counter Culture’ in Clapham and ‘Rök’ in Islington, who combine top British ingredients with Nordic fermenting techniques. It’s time to get friendly with bacteria!

Ancient Grains

Due to their health credentials, teff, spelt and freekeh are on the menu this year. More digestible than their refined counterparts of wheat, rye and barley, these heritage grains are also more sustainable due to their natural resistance to pests and droughts. Additionally, there is evidence to link gluten intolerance to over-processed ingredients. Avoiding over-engineered wheat for unprocessed grains can only mean good things for your gut.

Ocean Greens

Thanks to their superfood properties, you’ll be seeing a lot more sea greens in 2019. Think seaweed butter, kelp noodles, puffed water lily seeds, snackable salmon skins and kelp jerkies! Ocean Halo are a brand who are tapping into this growing market, offering everything from kelp-based sauces and broths to superfood, seawater drinks. It’s all getting a little bit fishy!

Unusual Ice Cream

Frozen gets funky! Waitrose have predicted ice cream to make a big comeback – but not as we know it! Like it or loath it, you’ll see more unique flavours as well as unusual savoury varieties including avocado, hummus and tahini! Check out La Gelatiera’s spicy Basil and Chilli combo for a taste explosion!

Don’t get left behind in 2019. Whether its pickled cabbage sarnies or warm cups of cultured tea, we suggest tweaking your menu to remain relevant in today’s crowded casual dining market. With Millennials desperate for a memorable experience and with their pursuit to take the ultimate Instagram photo, your blue cheese and walnut ice cream could well win them over this year!
